The
existing urban environmental infrastructure in major metros of
India was primarily built decades ago in the British era. Since
then, not much was done to improve the infrastructure until the
eighties.
Only
250 of India's 4,000 cities and towns have installed sewer systems,
and many of these systems discharge untreated sewage into lakes,
rivers and seas. Ironically, while one of the first civilizations
to use efficient sewage technology was the ancient Indian Indus
Valley civilisation almost 4,500 years ago, almost one half of
Mumbai's 13 million residents do not have toilets or sewer connections!
